Silvered Shortsword
The Silvered Shortsword is a finesse melee weapon in Baldur's Gate 3 with the silvered property, making it a situational choice against enemies affected by silvered weapons.
Overview
Silvered Shortsword is a standard melee shortsword in Baldur’s Gate 3, distinguished by its silvered construction rather than by a named magical effect or legendary status.
It occupies the light, finesse-oriented shortsword role and is most relevant to characters already using one-handed weapons or seeking a situational alternative to an ordinary shortsword. Its defining distinction is the silvering itself; the item should not be treated as equivalent to the named Silver Sword of the Astral Plane or as a replacement for a stronger enchanted weapon. It is a base-game weapon rather than a separate DLC variant, and its practical value depends on the encounters and equipment available when it is acquired.
How to Obtain
- Reach Crèche Y'llek in Act 1; no DLC, New Game Plus, or special class requirement is needed.
- 01In Act 1, travel through Rosymorn Monastery to Crèche Y'llek and speak with A'jak'nir Jeera, the githyanki quartermaster. The Silvered Shortsword is available in her merchant inventory; trade with her to purchase it rather than obtaining it as a quest reward or enemy drop.
Availability
Requires Access to the Zhentarim Hideout; no ability-score requirement is established
No separate Online, NG+, DLC, or difficulty-specific availability applies.
Mechanics and Handling
The Silvered Shortsword uses the normal shortsword handling model rather than introducing a separate stance or resource system. It is a light, finesse melee weapon, so its attack modifier can use Strength or Dexterity according to the game’s finesse rules, while its close-range attacks use the shortsword’s standard piercing-weapon animations and timing. Its silvered identity does not change the basic attack sequence or create a separate button by itself.
Shortsword attacks and weapon actions
When the wielder is proficient, the weapon supports the standard shortsword attack pattern, including normal attacks and the weapon actions available to that weapon type, such as Flourish. These actions spend the character’s relevant action resources according to their descriptions; the sword has no ammunition, reload cycle, charge state, or throw-and-return behaviour. As a light weapon, it can also fit two-weapon fighting setups when the character’s other requirements are met.
Reach and silvering
The Silvered Shortsword has ordinary melee reach rather than the extended reach associated with reach weapons. Its main handling considerations are therefore positioning, attack timing, and whether the wielder benefits from a finesse weapon. The silvering is the item’s distinguishing property, but it does not replace the weapon’s standard shortsword moveset or automatically make every attack a special attack.
Strengths, Weaknesses and Best Uses
Strengths
- Finesse lets a Dexterity-focused character use the shortsword effectively, while Light supports dual-wielding with another suitable weapon.
- Its silvered property is relevant against creatures whose resistance is bypassed by silvered weapons, giving it a matchup-specific purpose beyond an ordinary shortsword.
Weaknesses
- As a basic shortsword, it lacks the stronger enchantments, riders, or unique actions found on named weapons, limiting its long-term damage and utility.
- Its silvering is specialized rather than universally valuable; outside the relevant matchups, it does not by itself provide a broad advantage over other shortswords.
Best uses
- Keep it as a situational sidearm for a Dexterity-based character when facing enemies affected by silvered weapons.
- Use it early as a light off-hand weapon or finesse backup until a more capable shortsword or other dual-wielding option becomes available.
